Mapplr’s favorite hotels in Prague 14 May 08

Prague is one of the most atmospheric cities in the world and one that has undergone an astonishing transformation. I love walking around Prague - getting lost in the narrow alleys between buildings, wandering around the old Jewish cemetery, popping into a bar for good beer and climbing up to the castle across the river.

There are boutique hotels and B&Bs that are reasonably priced unlike cities like Florence and Rome where people charge much more for the same level of quality and service. Here are Mapplr’s favorite hotels in Prague.

Mapplr’s favorite hotels in Barcelona 13 May 08

There are few cities in the world I enjoy as much as Barcelona. It has everything I like in a city: a great beach, art, history, fabulous restaurants and tapas bars, amazing night life, good bookstores, eccentric characters. I have stayed in different parts of town: once at the base of Tibidabo and another time on the Plaza Santa Maria del Mar. I used to swim everyday at the Club Natacio Barcelona on the beach at Passeig Joan de Borbo 93 and indulged in sinful artistic pastries at Bubo (one needs a lot of calories after a long swim).

There are a lot of new hotels and B&Bs in Barcelona to accommodate people like me who love the city and enjoy the Catalan lifestyle (which means eating out late at night, hanging out in football cafes with the locals to cheer on FC Barcelona, shopping in markets such as the Boqueria).

Here are a few of my favorite hotels in Barcelona. If you want to stay outside the city on the beach, head to Sitges or Vilanova i la Geltru. I recently posted favorite restaurants

Mapplr’s favorite hotels in Florence 12 May 08

Florence is one of the most atmospheric cities in the world with art, history, fashion and design crammed into a very small place. The city has become unbearable during the tourist season so it’s best to visit in the winter. Hotels charge a lot of money for rooms, but if you are willing to do a bit of research or stay in the beautiful hills of Fiesole above Florence, you can find more reasonably priced accommodations.

Make sure you check out our restaurant recommendations as well and let us know of your experiences with the hotels and restaurants we recommend here. If you find places not on our list, let us know.

Mapplr’s favorite restaurants in Chicago 10 May 08

Chicago is best known for its architecture and lively urban scene (music, theater, nightclubs). Carl Sandburg’s poem “Chicago” published in 1916 still conveys the city’s atmosphere, almost a century later, long after it lost most of its industrial and manufacturing base. Although most foodies look to the coasts for inspiration, Chicago has a lot of excellent restaurants. Here are Mapplr’s favorites in Chicago.
