There are few cities in the world that can compete with Rome when it comes to history, art, cuisine, shopping and atmosphere. The city gets thousands of visitors every year but lags behind other European cities in high quality accommodations that don’t cost a fortune. I’ve tried to put together a list of reasonably priced hotels in various areas of Rome. I once stayed on the Campo dei Fiori which has a wonderful produce market and inexpensive (but good) restaurants.

It’s that time of the year when people are making travel plans for the summer. London is one of my favorite cities, but it’s not easy finding a good place to stay that’s good value at the same time. I’ve listed my favorite hotels in different areas of the city for different budgets. Personally I like staying in Notting Hill or Covent Garden because there’s so much to do and the shopping is fabulous. I will post a list of my favorite restaurants and cafes in a few days.

Toronto is a beautiful cosmopolitan city that has very good restaurants and a fabulous night life (and an excellent ice hockey team). There are a lot of excellent ethnic places to dine, especially in Chinatown, where you can also find Vietnamese food.

Cape Town is one of those unusual beach cities that is surrounded by so much natural beauty and is at the same time cosmopolitan, trendy, young and lively. With people from so many different parts of the world, great vineyards at its doorstep and fresh local produce, it’s no surprise that eating out is a big deal. Here are my favorites.

There are so many good restaurants in Paris so it’s hard to decide which ones to visit when you’ve got only one week in the city. Last December, while attending the LeWeb 3.0 conference, I headed down to Afaria, a small neighborhood restaurant in the 15th arrondissement, which was recommended by several French friends and by blogger, Adrian Moore. I like neighborhood restaurants, the ones that don’t have all the Michelin stars and the heavy celebrity presence. The food was very good, but what stood out from all of the dishes I tried was the boudin noir (blood sausage). Don’t miss Afaria if you are in Paris.
- Vibe: elegant neighborhood restaurant in the 15th, small and intimate, with a communal table for sharing tapas in the front part of the restaurant.
- Pros: very delicious northern Spanish and southwest French cuisine including boudin noir and maigret de canard. You can carry on a conversation with your dinner companions because the noise level is low. Excellent service and good wine list.
