Hamburg reminds me a lot of Amsterdam. But Hamburg has retained its gritty atmosphere because it still is a working port city. Amsterdam had ceded that function to Rotterdam a long time ago. Hamburg is also the traditional center of the German publishing industry. As a result, it attracts many creative types who now live in the newly renovated “docklands” area.
