Restaurant Revan: delicious Turkish food in Amsterdam 6 September 09
Ever since I visited Istanbul, I’ve been crazy about Turkish food. I am hunting down good Turkish restaurants wherever I go. Amsterdam has a number of good Turkish places but the recent addition to the dining scene, Restaurant Revan, is fabulous. Better yet, the prices are reasonable. The starters range in price from €4.50-€7.50; main dishes are between €13.50 and €22.50.
For starters you have cold and warm mezze (small plates) which is how you begin a meal in Turkey. I recommend the aubergine dishes (especially the aubergine salad), the stuffed grape leaves and the domates soslu (savoury meatballs in tomato sauce). I could eat everything from the mezze menu and never even get to the main courses.
Yes, the main courses: the kebabs are all delicious as is the Revan guvec which is a lamb dish with aubergines, tomato sauce, garlic, and green pepper. Vegetarians are well-catered for at Revan: red lentil soup, rucola pomegranate salad and a host of other well-prepared vegetable dishes will not leave you hungry. There’s also a lot for seafood lovers to choose from – try the sardines and the baked fish. For dessert, nothing beats the kunefe, which was my favorite dessert in Istanbul.
Revan is located in de Pijp, a district in Amsterdam with a lot of ethnic restaurants, lively cafes and bars. The vibe is young and happening, unlike the area around the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, which is a bit dull and stuffy.

Interesting! Didn’t know there was an upscale Turkish restaurant on van Woustraat. Most places there are half Italian, half Turkish snackbar.
But Revan looks great and apparently got a rave 9.5 out of 10 from van Dam! Will have to try!
