Hotel Viura is a luxury boutique hotel in Villabuena de Alava, a Basque town in the Rioja wine region of Spain. Unlike many hotels in the area, Hotel Viura is strikingly modern, with rooms stacked up like cubes, contemporary furniture, an elegant gourmet restaurant and a rooftop terrace that affords a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and the mountains. With walls and floors in raw concrete, floor to ceiling windows and ultra modern lighting, it is not what you expect to see in rural Spain but for some reason, it blends well into the traditional stone and red-tile village.
Hotel Viura has 33 rooms: the standard Viura (125 EUR), Deluxe (145 EUR) and Suite (240 EUR). There’s free Wi-Fi, plasma screen TVs and a gym. I stayed in the Deluxe room which had huge windows overlooking the municipal swimming pool and a small stream. The bathroom has a bath tub and a high-pressure shower.
The Hotel Viura restaurant serves delicious innovative local cuisine and a large variety of wines from the region. You can order a la carte or opt for the degustation menu, which pairs wine with several courses. I stayed at the hotel in the spring (late April) and there was hardly anyone else. I took long walks in the countryside and visited the stunning Baigorri winery just down the road.
Villabuena de Alava is in the Basque region of Rioja Alavesa. It is situated between Pamplona and Burgos, lies 20 minutes away from Logroño and Haro; more importantly, it is only 10 minutes from the wine cellars of Ysios and Marqués de Riscal. It is also on the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela (Camino de Santiago de Compostela). The region is popular among hikers, cyclists, stressed out urbanites who want to get away from the noise and busyness of the city and of course, lovers of Rioja wine who want to make a tour of the region’s wineries.
