The Macalister Mansion is a recently renovated colonial mansion turned into a boutique hotel in Penang, Malaysia. Walking amidst the gardens and through the hallways of the Macalister Mansion is like taking a step back in time. The restored colonial building, constructed in the early 1900s, is one of Penang’s newest boutique hotels, located just off the historic Macalister Road in the historic Georgetown district. Unlike the massive hotels along the waterfront in Penang, the Macalister Mansion feels much more exclusive and tranquil.
The Malaysian hotel was inspired by traditional English design and each space in the mansion was created to make every guest feel at home. With elegant furnishings and spacious rooms, the hotel offers a break from the overly trendy decor of most new hotels. And while the building may be more than 100 years old, the mansion has been carefully redesigned with a modern twist on a beautiful, historic setting.
Named after Sir Norman Macalister, one of the first British Governors of Penang when it was known as the Prince of Wales Island, this boutique hotel offers guests eight different rooms to choose from. Each room includes a nod to the arts inspired by the life story of Sir Norman Macalister: from a photograph by Penang photographer Howard Tan in Room 2 to a commissioned piece of art by Indonesian artist Albert Yonathan in Room 6.
Each room offers complimentary snacks and beverages, as well as other amenities such as WiFi, a smart LED TV and your choice of local daily newspapers.
But the guest rooms aren’t the only feature that will delight guests. Hangouts such as the Bagan Bar, where you can grab a refreshing Midori Spice cocktail or Pretty in Pink mocktail in an almost library-like setting, and the pristinely white Dining Room, with tempting fare such as confit quail and smoked duck breast, are what truly set this mansion apart.
One other such room, The Den, is a place where guests can enjoy a plethora of quality cigars or a glass of strong, superior whiskey. Exquisitely decorated with high, twisting chandeliers and brightly tiled floor, The Den invites guests to relax as they spend time in the historic building. During the day visitors can admire the sprawling views of the property as they cool off in the hotel’s large above-ground pool and sip on drinks from the outdoor bar on The Lawn.
With astounding artwork in every guest room, and a historic location that can’t be beat, Macalister Mansion provides a fantastic unique place to stay in Penang, but a place you won’t want to leave.
