Mama Shelter Istanbul is another of French-based Mama Shelter chic boutique budget hotels that recently opened in Turkey. Their first hotel was launched in Paris in the 20th arrondissement, see our writeup “Mama Shelter: chic Paris boutique hotel for the budget-conscious“. Since then, the group has also opened a hotel in Marseille and will be opening one in Lyon soon. The concept of Mama Shelter as a boutique hotel was created by the people who started Club Med; the hotels are designed by Philippe Starck.
Rooms in Mama Shelter Istanbul start at the reasonable sum of 69 Euros, contributing the the sucess of the concept. We are fans of the area around Beyoğlu, and prefer it to the touristy area of Sultanahmet (near the Grand Bazar and Hagia Sophia).
Istiklal Caddesi, the main pedestrian thoroughfare running from Galata towards Taksim, which used to be run down, has been renovated and is humming with pedestrians and shoppers. This area is also buzzing with activity at night because of the large number of restaurants nearby. While the downsides to Mama Shelter are street noise and small rooms, you do get to stay in the center of lively, young Istanbul at a chic, Stark-designed hotel for a fraction of the price of other boutique hotels.
