Floroom 2 is on the via del Sole, between Piazza Strozzi and Piazza Santa Maria Novella. It has stylish apartments that combine traditional Tuscan design elements with modern technology. There is free Wi-Fi in every apartment (plus satellite TV and air conditioning). Prices start at 160 EUR per night.

Floroom 2 is a few minutes walk from the main railway station and is nestled between the most important palazzi of the city – the Palazzo Tornabuoni, Palazzo Antinori, Palazzo Rucellai. It is also just two blocks from my favorite Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, one of the most atmospheric and oldest pharmacies in the world, certainly the only one I know of with ceiling frescoes dating back from the 17th and 18th centuries. Opened in 1612, it still sells soaps, lotions, elixirs, tonics, eaux de cologne and potpourri in the ancient Dominican monastery linked to the church of Santa Maria Novella.

*Make sure you check out the Florence restaurant recommendations of Floroom’s owners, Giacomo Fantini and Francesca Pecci.

Visitors to Florence spend days marveling at the glories of the Renaissance: the stunning 15th century palazzi, Michelangelo’s sculptures, the paintings in the Uffizi Gallery, and the imposing Duomo. But when it comes to accommodations, most people are strictly 21st century.

If you like ultra-modern decor, gorgeous Bisazza mosaics and high-tech amenities, check out the Hotel Una Vittoria, an 84-room hotel on the other side of the Arno from the center of Florence. But don’t think it’s far away from the main sights. On the contrary, it is a few blocks away from my favorite little secret spot in Florence — the Brancacci chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, which houses several paintings of Masaccio, one of the early Renaissance painters who is known for his mastery of light, perspective and realism.

Hotel Una Vittoria has three types of rooms (classic, superior and executive) and the prices are reasonable (100 EUR to 220 EUR if you book in advance). Rooms have Wi-Fi and flat screen TVs. There is a bar and a restaurant on the premises, too. The hotel seems more geared to business travelers and the conference market given its size, but it is still a worthwhile place to consider if you are visiting the city.

This week, I found out about Floroom, a B&B owned by Giacomo Fantini and Francesca Pecci. Floroom is located on the top floor of an old building in the center of Florence. It is right by the Piazza della Passera, a small square behind the Old Bridge and the Pitti Palace. I love the modern, sophisticated bedrooms all in white. And hey have free Wi-Fi and satellite TV.

Florence is one of the most atmospheric cities in the world with art, history, fashion and design crammed into a very small place. The city has become unbearable during the tourist season so it’s best to visit in the winter. Hotels charge a lot of money for rooms, but if you are willing to do a bit of research or stay in the beautiful hills of Fiesole above Florence, you can find more reasonably priced accommodations.
