Ibiza is one of my favorite holiday destinations because it has beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants and a vibrant night life. But if you prefer to hide away in your private space and spend your days reading books, I suggest Les Terrasses, a restored finca (farm house) only 8 kilometers outside Ibiza town, on a hill. Les Terrasses is a bit difficult to find, but once you get there you’ll feel a million miles away from the beach crowds. With only ten rooms, it does not feel like a hotel. The rooms are airy, spacious, and individually decorated in a chic Mediterranean style. There are two swimming pools and a tennis court.

The owner of Les Terrasses, Françoise Pialoux, has poured her heart and soul into the place. Her restaurant, which is open every night, is much better than most restaurants on the island. Do not miss the Tuesday night dinner: that’s when she serves couscous. Most of the guests at the hotel and restaurant are French. Les Terrasses has received more press in France than in the UK or other countries.

Ibiza has a reputation for being a rowdy, party locale but most of that activity takes place in a corner of the island. Much of Ibiza is very quiet and rustic. If you prefer to get away from the crowds while you are on the island, I recommend staying at Can Marti, an agriturismo (tourist accommodations on a farm) in Sant Joan de Labritja on the northeastern side. Can Marti was built in the 1770s and purchased in 1994 by Peter and Isabelle Brantschen who are originally from Switzerland.

The Brantschens’ 17-hectare farm is a wonderful example of sustainable agricultural practices: they use solar energy; collect, treat and recycle water. They also have a small shop where they sell their farm produce (fruits and vegetables which they grow on their land). The farm is self-sustaining in terms of energy and water.

Can Marti has four apartments (each one is furnished in a different rustic style) with Wi-Fi access. There are semi-private outdoor decks and lounging areas. Guests can walk around the farm and enjoy the hammam, which is opening this year. Prices range from 910 EUR to 1740 EUR per week (low to high season). The little village of Sant Joan is quirky, with a lot of former hippies living in the area and shops that seem straight out of the late 60s.

Ibiza is my favorite island in the Baleares because it’s got everything: glorious beaches, fabulous nightlife, great food and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The island attracts a truly international and sophisticated crowd. The only touristy place to avoid is Sant Antoni, which is a tiny corner of the island. You can drive through Ibiza on a warm summer day and encounter few cars or people. The other unique feature of Ibiza is that there has been an alternative, hippie community living on the island for many years. As a result, the vegetarian food is very delicious and better than you’d find in large cities elsewhere. There are numerous farmers markets, small stores selling organic products and a vibrant, eco-conscious community to support it all.

But before you can enjoy Ibiza, you’ve got to make reservations. It’s busy in the summer. Here are my favorite hotels and B&Bs. I’ve stayed in Can Marti, an agriturismo that is ecologically self-supporting: they generate electricty via solar power, collect and purify rain water and run their farm in a sustainable manner. It is also located in the northeast part of the island, which is quiet and beautiful.
