The Casa de los Azulejos in Mexico City looks impressive from the outside with its entire façade covered in blue and white tiles, but inside, it’s a dream. A colonial mansion built in the late 1500s, it is now the home of Sanborn’s, a popular restaurant that serves traditional Mexican cuisine. The best place to dine is in the interior courtyard (pictured above) where busy waitresses in traditional costume dart back and forth between the kitchen and the dining room. The food is delicious and inexpensive. Unlike the restaurants I’ve already reviewed on Mapplr, which are in the posh Polanco area, Sanborns is down-to-earth and homey. On Sundays, you find Mexican families and groups of friends lunching here after they’ve strolled through the historic center. Sanborns is the perfect place for lunch after visiting the Cathedral, the Templo Mayor (Aztec ruins), and the Palacio Nacional with its massive Diego Rivera murals.

Vibe: atmospheric colonial mansion dating back to the 1500s, down-to-earth and family friendly.

Pros: delicious traditional Mexican cuisine, inexpensive, good service, close to the historic center

Cons: crowded on Sundays

Mexico City is completely underrated. I don’t understand why more people from the US spend long weekends there. Great museums and art, historical monuments and pyramids, lovely parks and fantastic restaurants. On my visit to Mexico City last month, I went to a wonderful seafood restaurant called Pampano (it’s the name of a fish) in the chic Polanco district (side-by-side Bentley and Hummer dealerships). The seafood was fresh and exquisitely prepared, and the service was outstanding.

Vibe: chic, elegant restaurant in the Polanco neighborhood; noise levels are low so you can actually have a conversation; well-dressed clientele.

Pros: fresh seafood prepared in innovative ways; luscious desserts. Portions are on the large side. Excellent service.

Cons: expensive for Mexico City, but not for people who are used to San Francisco or London prices.
