Santa Caterina: historic luxury hotel in Amalfi, Italy

Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi has been enchanting guests since 1880 with its lush gardens, fruit orchards and olive groves, and breathtaking views over the Mediterranean.

The luxury hotel is perched on a cliff off the Amalfi Drive, and guests use elevators carved into the rock to reach the sea water swimming pool, sun deck and private beach platform at the water’s edge. There is a small restaurant called Al Mare by the water, if you are too hungry and too lazy to go into town for lunch. There is also a more formal restaurant in the main hotel building. The hotel has 66 guestrooms and suites decorated in a cheerful, traditional southern Italian style of bright colors and tile. Rates per night for a double room start at 240 EUR (low season) and 335 EUR (high season).

Unlike other hotels in the area, the Santa Caterina is still in the hands of the same family that built it in the late 1800s. They have modernized and upgraded the facilities, but it is still very much a local Amalfi holiday destination. It is also a favorite for weddings and couples on a honeymoon.

Hotel Il San Pietro: glamorous seaside retreat in Positano, Italy

The venerable Il San Pietro in Positano has been around for forty years and a recent renovation is making it once again a favorite among visitors to the Amalfi Coast. Its location is unbeatable; it is built into the rocky cliffs over the Mediterranean with vertigo-inducing drops into the sea on either side.

From the hotel you can gaze out onto Capri, Positano and Praiano. All 62 rooms have a private terrace with sea views. There is a private beach, a hidden cove, accessible to guests via an elevator. The restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star. It is a favorite among celebrities such as Julia Roberts (star of the recent film, “Eat Pray Love”).

Casa Angelina: luxury boutique hotel on the Amalfi Coast

Few hotels in the world can boast of a better location than Casa Angelina, a luxury boutique hotel perched on the edge of a rocky cliff between Amalfi and Positano with stunning views over the Mediterranean.

In addition to rooms and suites with terraces, Casa Angelina has four apartments that are perfect for families or couples who want more privacy and space. These apartments are renovated fishermen’s houses by the La Gavitella beach. All hotel guests can get to the beach via a private glass elevator. There is also a swimming pool, fitness center and a private boat to rent for little trips along the coast. The hotel’s restaurant, Un Piano Nel Cielo, is popular not only among guests but also among people staying in the other towns and villages in the area. Romeo Hotel: luxury chic boutique hotel in Naples, Italy

If you are going to Naples and prefer contemporary chic over shabby baroque, then check out the Romeo Hotel. With 85 rooms, some of which have fabulous views over the Bay of Naples, plus a hammam and sushi bar, this is definitely not the typical Neapolitan “grand hotel” from the 1800s. There are wellness suites, a Japanese garden suite, and a studio corner unit. And of course, free Wi-Fi. It is also close to the ferry terminal where you can easily take a boat to Capri for the day.

I just finished posting the Eat Pray Love guide to the best pizza in Naples. But Naples is more than just pizza so here is a list of excellent restaurants in the city. One of the joys of eating in Naples is that the seafood is very fresh and deliciously prepared. Among my favorite seafood dishes are spaghetti alle vongole (clams), rice with octopus, and tagliatelle with squid ink. Other local (non-seafood) favorites are involtini di melanzane (thinly sliced eggplant rolled up with filling) and pasta puttanesca (tomato sauce with garlic, olives, capers and anchovies).

Cibi Cotti: tiny restaurant hidden away in the Torreta market , good inexpensive food, not yet discovered by tourists (open only for lunch); via F. Galliani 29, Mergellina.

Antica Osteria da Tonino: traditional Neapolitan dishes in the Chiaia district; via Santa Teresa a Chiaia, 47.

La Locanda del Grifo: pizza, pasta, risotto, gnocchi served outdoors on a lively terrace; via F. del Giudice, 14.

La Vela: small, simple restaurant serving amazing seafood right on the water in Posillipo, great views of the sea; Calata Ponticello a Marechiaro, 37.

La Stanza del Gusto: specializes in wine and cheese, this funky restaurant also serves wonderful small plates (prix fixe or a la carte) and vegetarian dishes; prix fixe menus between 35 EUR and 65 EUR; reservations recommended; Via Costantinopoli 100, + 39 081 401578.

Osteria da Dora: one of the very best seafood restaurants in Naples; 30 Via Ferdinando Palasciano, + 39 081 680519.

Eat Pray Love Naples Pizza Guide

Here’s a list of Mapplr’s favorite pizzerias in Naples, Italy. There’s a reason why Elizabeth Gilbert went to Naples to eat pizza in her novel, “Eat Pray Love”: Naples is where pizza was invented and perfected. In the film, Julia Roberts (who plays Gilbert) devours an entire pizza napoletana, in defiance of her expanding waistline. If you have additions to this list, let us know.

Trianon: an institution in Naples since the 1930s, and possibly the most crowded pizzeria in town, check out the oven with mosaic tiles (photo below); via P. Colletta 42-44.

Pizzeria Brandi: where pizza margherita was first made in 1889 in honor of Queen Margherita; on a small street called Salita S. Anna di Palazzo, very close to via Chiaia.

Pizzeria La Notizia: famous for the pizza bianca (white pizza) with basil, pecorino and lard, located on via Caravaggio 53 in the Posillipo neighborhood.

Da Michele: they’ve been making pizza here since 1870 and five generations later, they’ve stuck to the tradition of Neapolitan pizza, making only pizza margherita and pizza marinara; via Cesare Sersale, 1-3.

The city is endlessly fascinating, with its palaces, churches and museums to delight you. Are you thinking of spending a couple of days in Naples, to try the city’s famed pizza napoletana like the characters in the film and book “Eat Pray Love”? Don’t limit yourself to the pizza; the seafood, pasta, and desserts are all divine. And beyond the culinary attractions of the city, there are gorgeous baroque palaces and churches, and the impressive National Museum of Archaeology, where Roman artifacts from Pompeii are displayed.
