The Stockholm hotel-restaurant-bar scene has a newcomer this year: Story Hotel which opened right in the center of Stockholm, the lively area around Riddargatan and the Stureplan. Story Hotel has been nominated for two awards at the European Hotel Design Awards 2009: best conversion of an existing building to hotel use and best restaurant design.

The hotel combines an industrial feel because they kept the exposed concrete walls, but they added eclectic design elements to give it warmth and style. There are three types of rooms: small, medium and large. All have free WiFi and bath products from Kiehls. The smallest room called Super Squeeze is only 11.5 square meters and it suits travelers who come in late and check out early, i.e. people whose only interest is to crash somewhere (price around 990 SEK / 97 EUR / US$142). The largest room is the Lily Dam Suite which is 54 square meters and has two balconies (price around 2890 SEK / 280 EUR / US$420).

You can book by going to www.storyhotels.com. You receive a 5-digit code via email or SMS. You use this code to check in at the hotel lobby computer where you are assigned your room.

One of the best things about this hotel is the restaurant and the lively bar. It’s very popular among the locals so a very fun place to hang out and meet friends or business colleagues.

Stockholm is one of my favorite cities in the world because it has two things I love: physical beauty and good food. I worked there for a while in 2000 as the Chief Legal Officer of Spray Network, a pan-European Internet portal based in Sweden. I have delightful memories of the city, not only because I was working with a group of fun people during a crazy time (it was the dotcom boom and we were about to do an IPO on three stock exchanges), but because of the beauty of Stockholm archipelago. Consisting of thousands of islands, some so tiny they can barely fit a house, the archipelago draws people who like water sports, but also those who treasure the serenity of a quiet summer weekend. I took ferries to and from the islands, savoured the fresh herring and crayfish, the berries in the summer, and the crispy apples in the fall.

Stockholm has a lot of fabulous restaurants, despite most people’s (including Swedes) disdain for the traditionally bland Scandinavian cuisine. Young chefs are reinventing Swedish cuisine and in cities like Antwerp and Amsterdam, there are Swedish chefs (a far cry from the Swedish Chef on the Muppet Show) who have established outstanding restaurants.
