If you are looking for an intimate, historic place to stay in the center of Vienna, you should check out the Hotel Hollman Beletage, housed in a restored 19th century mansion. The hotel has only 25 rooms, all of which are large and comfortable, and designed in a sophisticated, contemporary style. The patron, Robert Hollmann, created the hotel to introduce travelers to the charming spirit of Austria’s capital which include its history, culture, architecture and vibrant urban life. The hotel has a garden terrace, small cinema, playroom and a multi-functional theater-salon.

Wooden floors and dark furniture help to create a cool modern style. You can choose from among three types of rooms: Beletage, Mezzanin and Residenz. All rooms have modern conveniences (e.g. free Wi-Fi) along with special touches such as a daily assortment of fresh fruit. The restaurant is said to have some of the best coffee in Vienna and the 6-course breakfast menu is a treat if you are very hungry. You can even bring home some culinary finesse if you choose to take their cooking classes, which focus on seasonal cuisine using local products in dishes with a contemporary twist.

The hotel is a two-minute walk to St. Stephen’s Cathedral; you can walk to the main shopping streets, Graben and Kaerntnerstrasse, in three minutes and to the Opera in ten minutes. The subway is only 2 minutes away.

Room rates start at €140; for larger rooms, the rates start at €180.

Located in central Vienna’s old quarter, the carefully renovated Hotel Altstadt is meeting place for artists, musicians, and travelers seeking a unique place to stay. This 42-bedroom, four-star hotel is only seven minutes from the subway, giving it a quiet and relaxing atmosphere but still within walking distance from the central shopping district.

Travelers can choose from a variety of room types: classic single, double, junior suite and apartment. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, cable TV and a full breakfast buffet. The apartment is ideal for short stays and has a living room, bedroom, kitchen and dining room. Rooms have hardwood floors and are individually designed with a modern touch.

As a winner of the Travelers’ Choice 2010 award, this hotel will definitely offer excellent service along with its exquisite design. The well-known Italian star architect Matteo Thun designed 8 rooms and 1 suite, as well as the bar lounge. Furthermore, the hotel will be sure to please any eco-conscious traveler as it is the first company in Vienna to be awarded the Austrian eco-label for tourism operators in 1998. They purchase low-waste and resource-saving products and optimize waste separation.

Breakfast is served in the Red Salon and complimentary tea and afternoon cakes are served daily. This chic hotel is also walking distance to the Opera, the Ringstrasse and the lively Museums Quartier. Rooms start at € 119 and can be booked online.

If you are looking for a luxurious place to stay in Vienna, but you want something more hip and modern (without being too sterile), consider The Ring Hotel across the Vienna State Opera. The hotel has 68 rooms, all of which have Internet access. The bar and the restaurant are very cool, not at all what you would expect from a place across an opera house. Although the rooms are expensive (starting at 275 EUR per night), what you get at The Ring equals or even exceeds the offerings in other five-star hotels in Vienna.

A few days ago I posted my favorite boutique hotels in Vienna. Now that you’ve found a place to stay, it’s time to check out a few very good places to eat in the city. Most of the ones I have listed here are Italian. I am not crazy about traditional Austria cuisine, which tends to be heavy and fattening, but I’ve nevertheless posted four suggestions for local cuisine at a traditional cafe or Gasthaus which have a lot of local atmosphere and are good value for money.

From the Hundertwasser House (above) to the Schönnbrunn Palace, Vienna is a city that shuffles seamlessly between the past and the present. Hang out in cozy cafes that have been the heart of Vienna life for decades or indulge in a shopping trip among the trendy boutiques of young Austrian designers.
