When you visit Zurich, you will find it impossible to resist the lure of scrumptious pastries and decadent chocolate creations. The city is packed with old-fashioned konditorei, but if you don’t stumble across one, you can rest assured that there will be a Sprüngli boutique placed in your path for the sole purpose of sabotaging your diet. You could, of course, go to Cakefriends where they give you the choice of eating something healthy (like a salad) or something utterly decadent. You could also just go for coffee or hot chocolate. The cafe is popular among younger people so the vibe is quite hip and modern. The location is ideal: not far from the lake and in the midst of a district filled with quirky boutiques.

Zurich is a wonderful city with stunning views of the mountains across the lake. It is cosmopolitan and urbane despite its small size. If, after two days of eating heavy central European food, you are craving something more exotic, make sure you go to Maison Blunt, a popular restaurant in the neighborhood behind the train station.

Maison Blunt serves Moroccan food: couscous, tagines, and mezzes (cold and warm). The place is packed, so you must reserve ahead of time. The crowd is young and artsy; the place has an industrial feel with Mediterranean tiles on the floors. One advantage of eating out in this neighborhood is that there are funky bars and cafes nearby. On warm days, you can even eat in the outdoor terasse (in their backyard).

Yesterday I posted a list of my favorite restaurants in Zurich. Today it’s all about hotels. As many of you know, I am not a fan of chain hotels because I am looking for a more personal touch. However, I am not prepared to pay exorbitant amounts for a “boutique hotel” experience. A number of luxury boutique hotels get away with charging 500 EUR or more per night. Paying these amounts, I feel, is simply excessive and wasteful, even if you have a lot of money.

So here are my favorite hotels in Zurich, places which, by Swiss standards, are reasonably priced but still provide a unique experience.

Mention Zurich to frequent travelers and two words come to mind: boring and expensive. Fortunately, much has changed in the past few years to make the city a bit more exciting, with more dining choices for people who aren’t in town to visit their private banker (although given the credit crunch and the disastrous financial results of Union Bank of Switzerland, private bankers may be reading this post, too). One of the most innovative concepts in dining is Blindekuh (German for blind cow). I won’t ruin the surprise; visit their website which is listed below. And when the weather permits, Seerose, on the lake, is the perfect place to hang out.
